Scope and topics of interest

EDiS'2024 will take place in hybrid mode (on-site and online participation) and will span three days. It consists of a set of plenary lectures led by specialists in their field of interest, and oral communications and poster sessions. The main focuses covered by the conference include:

Neuromorphic computing: towards ultra low power AI

Neuromorphic computing, especially when using analog electronics, has the potential to provide ultra low power near-sensor computing. We will show how these hardware spiking neural networks can be applied to various use cases and discuss some of the challenges we tackle in our research.

Pr. Fulvio Risso

The way toward a Transparent Computing Continuum

Despite the number of projects and initiatives aiming at creating the so called computing continuum, surprisingly no commonly adopted definitions exists so far. This talk proposes a definition of the Computing Continuum that relies on three transparency properties, namely deployment, communication, and resource availability. This definition borrows from the seminal concept of liquid computing, which has been further extended and refined in the FLUIDOS Horizon Europe project. This talk will present the different definitions that exists for the computing continuum, the differences against the FLUIDOS approach, some of the use cases that can be enabled, the advantages and the potential drawbacks. Finally, this talk will present an overview of the basic technologies that can be used to achieve this objective, and the current state of the art of the research.

Integrating IoT and Data Platform for improving Smart Agriculture

Traditional agriculture can no longer adequately absorb the world’s growing demand for food. Water scarcity and climate change seriously threaten global food security for present and future generations. In this context, smart agriculture emerges as a new approach that focuses on optimizing production efficiency, increasing quality, minimizing environmental impact and reducing the use of resources (energy, water and fertilizers). The emergence of smart agriculture implies high productivity ratios thanks to the modernization of irrigation and climate systems and the application of advanced control systems. The digitalisation of the primary sector is changing rapidly the approach and the management of the productivity based on a combination of different ICT technologies, like IoT, Big data, advanced communication technology and the integration of heterogeneous data sources. In this talk we will review different scenarios and projects ongoing on how to use the combination of these technologies in several context of the smart agriculture sector.

Wireless Sensor Network for rural area monitoring and precision agriculture

Current advances in sensors, hardware deployments, Wireless Technologies and energy storage, allow the development of small devices gathering data fron long distances for long period of time. This speech will show last research about the development of sensors and new wireless sensor node implementations for precision agriculture. We will also show network protocols and algorithms deployed for rural area monitoring and explain developed projects that use artificial ingelligence in wireless sensor networks for precision agriculture and rural area monitoring.

Cross device and silo Federation Learning: Medical use cases and security challenge

Federated learning is a new learning paradigm dedicated to preserve data privacy by achieving collaborative learning including several devices or centers without moving the data from their original location. This new learning method aims to create a global shared model form a set of decentralized datasets. It allows a global model to learn from several distributed sub-models, improving overall performance without compromising individual subsets. Within this paradigm, individual participants do not exchange their local data, but local centers train similar model on their own data. The use of Federated Learning for specific uses cases like breast cancer early diagnosis and analysis will be discussed. Also, there are some security issues that must be tackled when using Federated Learning paradigm. These issues will be presented and discussed. The existing countermeasures studied in the literature like differential protection, secure multi-party computation, etc. will be presented.

Hardware-Aware Dynamic Neural Architecture Search Edge Computing

Dynamic neural networks (DyNNs) have become viable techniques to enable intelligence on resource-constrained edge devices while maintaining computational efficiency. In many cases, the implementation of DyNNs can be sub-optimal due to its underlying backbone architecture being developed at the design stage independent of both: (i) the dynamic computing features, e.g. early exiting, and (ii) the resource efficiency features of the underlying hardware, e.g., dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS). In this talk,, we will present a novel Hardware-Aware Dynamic Neural Architecture Search framework HADAS. HADAS realizes DyNN architectures whose backbone, early exiting features, and DVFS settings have been jointly optimized to maximize performance and resource efficiency. Our experiments using the CIFAR-100 dataset and a diverse set of edge computing platforms have seen HADAS dynamic models achieve up to 57% energy efficiency gains compared to the conventional dynamic ones while maintaining the desired level of accuracy scores.
